From the outset, the objects of the charity were clear to all: to raise funds for the promotion, study and welfare of dogs and to encourage academic research. Another important aim was to bring dog folk together for the good of dogs. This charity is proud to know that these objectives have encouraged similar initiatives here and other countries. Each year, our main source of fundraising comes from the organisation of the Contest Of Champion Show Dogs licensed by the Kennel Club, which involved a knock out competition to find the Champion of Champions from an invited entry of 64 of the top country’s top winning dogs of the year. The event is judged by a different team of three overseas all rounder’s each year and is preceded by a formal dinner and followed by dancing. Invitations to compete are highly valued among the showing fraternity. Indeed, it’s true to say that this event has long been established as one of the prestigious highlights of the show calendar. Since its inception the Canine Supporters Charity has been happy to disburse many hundreds of thousand of pounds to a wide range of research projects and welfare groups, large and small. It is the Charity’s proud boast that no officer or committee member receives any expenses whatsoever. Every penny raised is given away to deserving causes. The work of the Canine Supporters Charity continues year by year, with or without sponsorship but clearly, any financial or material sponsorship would do much to increase the charity capacity to help dogs, a cause common to us all. The main fundraising event is the annual Contest of Champion Showdogs, which was be held in 2004 on Saturday 3rd April at the Thistle Hotel, Heathrow. In 1997 alone the events raised £9,500 and over the last few years nearly £50,000 has been raised thanks to all of you! The beneficiaries have included Dogs for the Disabled, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and heart research. Please be generous and help us raise even more for the canine needy.
